Wall text from “Platform in KIMUSA 2009”

This construction was originally used as a living space for vehicle drivers of Defense Security Command transportation unit. We made a temporary studio for the new musical project in this room on the second floor. Five days of working in this place provided us with visual and acoustic work environment not yet experienced in regular studios. Moreover, something even more special was that it was enough to catch the strange feeling that after the time passed, the building is being used in a different way from its original purpose.

The purpose of this work is to elicit unusual experiences through active and spontaneous listening of the music and pursue the perceptive system of music in a broader sense through new musical, acoustic experiences that theaters or personal media players cannot bring.
In case of working in places with a history, I asked myself whether we are merely using the historical contexts of the place for dramatic effects by reflex without any profound insights into it. Therefore, we produced musical pieces using acoustics and sense of space made from the positions and arrangements of the constructional infrastructure including stairs and walls made from various materials which make up the inner construction of the chambers and hallways, with such superficial perception of space tuned down.

The piece is 20 minutes long, consists of four parts in total, and is played in a loop. All pieces of music except the orchestrated/orchestration part ( composed by Jung, Jaeil / performed by the Czech Philharmonic/Česká filharmonie) was recorded here.

We perceived all rooms including this one as a very big speaker enclosure and tried to utilize the resulting sounds as perspective representation. Therefore, as the music is being played, each listener, or “voyager”, will hear different music depending on his/her position, the direction s/he is looking, and the point of time. As a result, everyone in the audience listens to a piece similar yet different to each other’s.

One night, while listening to the sound seeping out from the unit building from the outside, We experienced a moment in which the whole unit building seemed like a huge speaker enclosure.
The most important structure in this work is the place, or this construction. Therefore, the moment the music leaves its place, it disappears.
